More than 30 stakeholder groups call on US House Energy and Commerce Committee leadership to reauthorize PAHPA

July 11, 2023 – Today, the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security and more than 30 other stakeholders representing academia, industry, and research institutes sent a letter to congressional members on the House Energy and Commerce Committee who are leading the reauthorization of the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act (PAHPA), set to expire on September 30, urging them to ensure that this critical piece of pandemic preparedness legislation is passed this year.

Led by the Center, the coalition called on Committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers, Ranking Member Frank Pallone, and Representatives Brett Guthrie, Anna Eshoo, and Richard Hudson to continue implementing a strong bipartisan path forward to reauthorizing PAHPA this year.

“We are concerned that if no bipartisan path is reached this year, the opportunity for PAHPA reauthorization will not be resumed until 2024,” write the signatories. “We worry that in such a case, PAHPA reauthorization may not be achieved until 2025…[which] would have serious effects on our country’s economic, national, and health security.”
