January 22, 2024 The Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security has been officially redesignated as a Collaborating Centre* for Global Health Security by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) until 2027. The Center has been a Collaborating Centre for 4 years, since its designation in 2019.

Through this work, the Center will continue to support global health security efforts led by WHO.

"We are grateful to Associate Scholar Lucia Mullen for her leadership in facilitating the renewal of this designation,” said Tom Inglesby, MD, director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. “Our team looks forward to our continued partnership with WHO as a Collaborating Centre for Global Health Security.”

Under the renewed collaboration, the Center will:

  • provide research and analysis for WHO on detection, preparedness, and response to natural and deliberate events and other threats to global health security;
  • support WHO in assessing the possible impact of ongoing developments in science and technology on global health security, including the responsible use of life science and dual use research of concern;
  • assist WHO in the evaluation of human health risks associated with deliberate events and other threats and support the development of appropriate policies and practices to strengthen health security; and
  • support WHO’s efforts to increase national capacities of Member States in their commitments to the International Health Regulations through the development of tools and relevant reports.

*Collaborating Centres, designated by the WHO Director-General, constitute a global network for activities and research supporting WHO programs, a concept originated at the Second World Health Assembly in 1949.
